As the New Year begins, you may be eager to start fresh and tackle new fitness goals. However, common mistakes can delay your progress and may even lead to injury. Here are five common fitness mistakes to avoid this year.
Not Warming Up
You don’t want to start your workout without a proper warm-up. Warming up prepares your muscles for physical activity, increases blood flow and can help reduce the risk of injury. Take five to ten minutes to warm up with light cardio and dynamic stretching before diving into your workout.
Lifting Too Heavy
Lifting weights that are too heavy can put unnecessary strain on your muscles and joints, which can lead to injury. It’s better to start with lighter weights or none at all and gradually increase the weight as you become stronger. First you want to focus on proper form and technique over the weight itself.
Not Hydrating
Staying hydrated is essential for physical performance and recovery. Not drinking enough water can lead to fatigue, dizziness and decreased athletic performance. Make sure to drink water before, during and after your workout.
Avoiding Rest Days
As much as you enjoy working out, it’s important to make time for rest as avoiding rest days can lead to burnout and injury. Aim to take a few rest days per week as you start a new routine in order for your body to get used to your new workouts.
Skipping Cool Downs
Cooling down after a workout is just as important as warming up before one. Cooling down helps your body transition after you exercise, which can help reduce muscle soreness and improve flexibility. Take five to ten minutes to stretch and cool down after your workout.
